This is one of my very favourite paintings I’ve ever made. It’s only ten inches, really tiny. I did it mostly to prove to myself that I can paint small, detailed people… when I tend to paint big abstract/landscape-ish things.
She was a remarkably sweet little girl. I remember a lot about her, she lived in a refugee camp with her mom. No siblings, which was rare. I lived there too for two weeks back in 2010. I have no idea where she is now, but I hope she still has her child-like spirit. She was one of the few little ones who still had a sense of light in her eyes.

  5. So I’ve been to the two poorest nations in the western world (Nicaragua & Haiti). And I’m not saying this to get missionary cool points or anything. But because I have a point to make about how God feels about these places.

Before going to Haiti people told me that when you fly over Haiti it looks desolate and sad, in comparison to the other side of the island that happens to be Dominican Republic which is lush and green.

Before going to Nicaragua I heard horror stories of people being robbed, getting sick from the water and just the tough conditions.

I’ve never been more blown away by the difference in my expectations and my experiences; than my time spent in these two nations.

And yes they may be poor, but in both places I could see God’s heart for the people. That when they had no food, no money, no hope He wanted to meet them where they were! AND wanted to expose the lie that these nations aren’t blessed, or aren’t beautiful.

I love being able to see these beautiful places as they were meant to be seen.

  8. i’m just going to apologize for this rant now, this has just been on my heart for too long not to share. but sometimes i feel like a crazy who is the only person who sees the world this way…

it frustrates me greatly that north america lives the way it does and thinks about the things that it thinks about and puts huge importance on things that are so superficial (i’m including myself in this). no matter how broke you think you are, you (and i’m talking to my city) live in canada, YOU ARE NOT POOR. when the Bible talks about rich people, like the rich young ruler, its talking about YOU (& i) and how we should be generous.

    Luke 12:48

…everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more. (ESV)

and much more simply from the contemporary english version…

…if God has been generous with you, he will expect you to serve him well. But if he has been more than generous, he will expect you to serve him even better. (CEV)

plain and simple YOU and i have been given much and its a disgrace to not serve Him well. Jesus, when on this earth cared about the poor and still does care about the injustice in this world. If you don’t, and you are professing to be a Christian i suggest you check your heart.
